I go to great lengths to not use the word “shoot”, or its permutations in relation to photography. Instead of “shot”, I will use “took” or “image” depending on the context. I don’t “shoot” pictures. Some of you may have noticed that. I’m still cleaning it out of the descriptions from some of my older images, so it exists place to place on this site. I started this in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018.
Why is this important to me? Photography, to me, is about peace, nature, and harmony. While the word is technically correct, it became vulgar in relationship to my photography after so many mass shootings in the US.
I tend to stay apolitical on this site, and I don’t believe this to be political, but some may see it that way. That’s okay.
I thought about this after this morning’s shooting in Miami, where 3 people fired indiscriminately into a billiards parlor, killing 2 and wounding 20. There has to be a better way to live. There has to be a better way to refer to photography.
