I call this page “Fun With Pixels” because I take liberties with the image that I normally would not. This is often in the form of the “Orton Effect”, which is basically layering a blurred version of the image over the original sharp one. It can create some interesting effects.

This is one of the first pictures I used a technique called The Orton Effect, which is employed by layering a blurry layer over a sharp one, and multiplying the effect. I haven’t learned to tone it down yet. Maybe I don’t even want to tone it down. I’m having too much fun.

I photographed this a few Junes ago in southern Washington state. I decided that it would look good in black and white. I added some Orton Effect before desaturating it. I like the softness that it created.

Burn Scars Along the Upper McCord Creek Falls Trail

I was in the Gorge last Saturday for what turned out to be a very short hike. I went out too late to make it to Upper McCord Creek falls, but I wanted to get a decent way up. That was not happening, because the rain started in earnest, and darkness was falling by the time I made it about a quarter mile. That’s okay. I got this picture.

Multnomah Falls, May 2018 # 2

Multnomah Falls at about 6:30 AM on May 10th 2018—the 8th anniversary of my best ever Multnomah Falls picture, which you can find on my photostream. Just look for the one from May 2010.
It was a bit breezy this morning, so the leaves are waving a bit on this one. Still, it’s nice to be able to photograph the falls after the events of last September.

This is Little Zigzag Creek near Welches, Oregon. I have seen this referred to as Little Zigzag Creek and Little Zigzag river at various places. The map says it’s a river. Hiking websites call it a creek.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn’t, and I made it out dry.

We drove into the Powell Valley today in search of fall colors. A fog was rising off of the Sandy River, and we entered it from above. I don’t like doing this, but I stopped the car in the road, and pointed the camera out the window and took this picture withough aiming. It worked better than I would have hoped.
